Some people are affected by a relatively prevalent seasonal affective disorder, where the length of the day directly affects their mood and mental balance. It’s more common than once thought, and it is a treatable condition. Mood affects a large part of your function and minding it is an essential habit, but often overlooked.

We bring this up because the ebb and flow of the seasons is at a still point during the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere; the first day of summer comes on June 21, the longest day of the year. It’s also the beginning of the draining heat that some call the summer doldrums.

For professional salespeople and others responsible for generating business, the doldrums needs relabeling; we propose the “Summer Rushes.” It is the midyear point, and there are significant numbers to hit. While there is still time, you need to get to it. So overcoming the expected lethargy and sleeplessness that late sunsets cause is required. You’ve got half the year left, so work hard now to ensure your holidays are truly happy and restful.

One way to maximize your effectiveness and efficiency is to take the few extra hours of daylight to learn something about your craft, enhance a skill or two, and study your industry. Gone are the late winter and spring meetings that soaked up weeks in the first and second quarter. Now you finally have some available time to use. So spend at least a little bit of that time building your influence and effectiveness.

Making it a good year means working hard now, but we all know that working hard alone does not guarantee success. The most useful approach is to apply significant effort to working smart.
