There are two kinds of professional salespeople that we encounter regularly. The first is a person who is happy with their career, and only develops their skills and abilities with training when they are compelled to do so. There’s nothing wrong with these people, they just don’t see the point in self-directed learning. To these people, we say, “We understand your perspective. But one thing to keep in mind is that today competition is more intense and losing is more harmful than before. The world is crowded, and beating your rivals today does not ensure that you will have the same success tomorrow. Standing still from a personal development standpoint is, in reality, going backward. More importantly, avoiding continuous learning and skill development is an admission that you aren’t serious about your career or profession. If you don’t see a return on investing in yourself, then why should others invest in you.”
The other kind of person is someone who actively develops themselves, their knowledge, skills and abilities, whether compelled to attend training or not. They read books, attend seminars, and spend time each day ensuring that they are getting stronger and more capable in their role. To these people, we say, “Keep going and go faster. The world is very competitive, and you are certainly doing what you should be doing to make sure that you are one of the winners. We encourage you to look at your options to increase the efficiency of your learning and development. There are options available that compress knowledge and skills into smaller chunks. Seek out solutions that give you the biggest bang-for-unit-time input into learning.”
To everyone, we say, “Thank you for doing what you do. The economy depends on you, and we want nothing more than to see you be an enormous success.”
